Rangers' Athletes Poised for Post-Secondary Success

As we approach September, the post-secondary recruiting battles are heating up across the province. A number of Rangers' players have made commitments to play at various colleges and universities across the province.

Tim McKinnon (CHHS 2010), a two year Rangers participant and CHHS grad will be heading to the University of Lethbridge (CIS-Candian Interuniversity Sport). Tim impressed during the school season as a key component of the 3A provincial champs coached by Lee Woodward. Tim spent last year developing his game with Rangers, but this summer's season was cut short by a significant leg injury. Tim's plan is to be back at full training by the time the Pronghorn's practices begin in late August. When Tim returns, his size and shooting ability should help bolster a Pronghorns program looking to make a dent in Canada West.

Jarred Wenzel (McCoy 2010) is heading to Kings University College in Edmonton to play in the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference). Jarred played a key role in the 2010-11 season at McCoy High School and is looking forward to contributing at Kings next season. Coach Skepple from Kings is excited and "looks forward to Jarred improving our capability at rebounding and scoring in the post." Jarred will be the first player from Medicine Hat to compete at Kings in Mens' Basketball. Jarred played two seasons of Rangers basketball and looks forward to coming back to help coach during the summer breaks from college.

Derek Leentvaar (CHHS 2010) heads to Olds College to play in the ACAL (Alberta Colleges Athletic League) for Bob Murray and the Broncos. Derek, a wiry athletic, 6' forward will bring athleticism and passion to the Broncos squad. Derek played three years for Rangers and has improved in every season of both school ball and the summer season. "Derek's experience with a winning program and his effort levels are key reasons we brough him to play in Olds," reports Cale Rasmussen, a former Medicine Hat College player and assistant coach with the Broncos, "We look forward to seeing what Derek will bring to the team."

Medicine Hat High School grads, Savannah Scheuerman (2010) and Samantha Cunningham (2010) will be playing locally after earning spots for Jason McLester's Medicine Hat College Rattlers, which play in the ACAC. Both Samantha and Savannah played two years with Rangers in addition to the their time with Coach Jamie Tschritter at Medicine Hat High School. Savannah will provide mid-range scoring in addition to being a tall, athletic addition to the post. Savannah has shown steady development since joining Rangers and should push to contribute right from the beginning of the season.

Samantha has quickness combined with long range accuracy which will give her the opportunity to play right away. Samantha's game savvy has consistently improved under the tutelage of Rangers' coach and college assistant Claire Tomczyk along with her athleticism and ball handling ability.

Rangers is proud of the dedication and work it took each of our athletes to get to the next level. We look forward to more of our athletes getting the opportunity to play at univeristy and college in the future.

Teams Finish Season at Great Canadian Shootout

All of our teams have finished the season during the July 2-4 weekend at the Great Canadian Shoot Out in Edmonton, Alberta. Both the U17 Girls and U15 Boys finished the season in an exceptional manner and brought medals back to Medicine Hat.

We would like to thank the coaches and managers of our prgoram for their support and time over the course of the season,

Queens of the Court Basketball Tournament

Rangers Basketball Club would like to thank the local Kinsmen for their support of the "Queens of the Court" tournament. The tournament was a big success with the Calgary Selects defeating OutWest in the final. All participants were impressed with the organization, facilities and competition.

We would like to thank all the officials and volunteers for helping make our tournament the success it was. We look forward to holding the tournament next year and will be considering expansion in terms of both size and age groups next year.
